The Film
On the morning of October 5th, 1975, Murali Nair — a young Indian doctoral student at Columbia University — races toward the most consequential day of his life. His PhD defense at 8:30 AM will determine not only his academic future but his family's path to a green card.
What he can't control is that his wife Viji, nine months pregnant, has gone into labor overnight. What unfolds is a pressure-cooker of two simultaneous countdowns — told across a cramped 1975 New York apartment, a hospital waiting room, and a Columbia conference room where a stone-faced committee chair is waiting.
Viji, pragmatic and quietly homesick, has been managing the isolation of a foreign city alone while Murali has been absorbed in his work. Murali ultimately walks out of his own defense to be at her side — and in the quiet aftermath, holding their newborn daughter, the two of them arrive at an answer together: they have nothing here, and that's exactly the point. They get to build it themselves.
They name her Munnu.
